Biographical Info

It's not like I'm special.

So let's start with the basics: I'm Hippolyta Kore, Sergeant aboard the BSG Hestia. My friends call my Polly.

I grew up in a middle class family in a middle class suburb of Delphi on Caprica. I had an elder brother and a younger sister, and a cat. There's not a lot to say about growing up. My parents actually didn't begin divorce proceedings until a couple of years into my tour of duty, and that's getting ahead of myself.

My childhood was pretty typical, I suppose. We went to temple - from a young age I would sing at services, and at one point the parish priestess even suggested I consider seminary, but the religious life was never for me. From the time I was a little kid I tore up the pyramid court. We had an active, comfortable life, and while we weren't rich, we weren't starving, either.

Highschool was a time of discovery for me. I was popular enough without being one of those kids who ruled the school, but I had enough respect for being a good student and a competent athlete (JV and Varsity Pyramid), and a credible performer (Delphi Union Show Choir). One day during sophomore year, there was an accident on the court while the coach was in his office; one of my teammates ended up with a third degree sprain. But while we were waiting for help to arrive, I seemed to know instinctively what to do - elevation, ice, all that. One of the paramedics who showed up complimented me on my quick thinking and said I should be a doctor someday.

I really liked how that felt. From that point on, I studied harder, especially in sciences, and when we got to the section on genetics…holy frak, is that stuff fascinating! Genetic code is like a jigsaw puzzle. I began to excel in my academics, but athletics began to falter. And even though finances were too tight, I was too stubborn to realize that a pyramid scholarship might be the only way for me to get into college, and eventually medical school. Except it wasn't! The military had a program to pay for college once you completed a term of service with them. It was my ticket to university and med school, and I'd even get 'on the job' training if I could get into AIT.

I entered the Colonial Marine Corps, got my way through basic training, and entered advanced training to be a combat medic. I wouldn't call it a cakewalk, but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I began my tour of duty, moving from ship to ship, rising in rank, until what would become my final assignment before the end of my tour: as a combat medic for the Hestia. Over the years I've even managed to get more than just some skill sharpening in the sickbays - on occasion I've gotten a fairly decent lesson from a friendly doctor or nurse beyond first aid and triage. I tried to learn as much as I can - even going out of my way to get trained in how to made rudimentary repairs on medical equipment. On my off duty time I'd end up playing pyramid or when bugged enough by the others, giving them a song that would remind them of home. I was proud of how far I'd come, I was starting to look into universities that would lead me into medical schools…

…and that's when it happened. It was almost over for me. It was almost done. Except then it really was. My family died in the initial bombings on Caprica, in so far as I know. I pinned their pictures up on the wall outside the obs deck, but I haven't pulled out my icons of the gods in a long time. It's hard to pray. It's even harder to sing. But sometimes I do…not for me. For them. And for my fellow soldiers, when they need it. Sometimes healing wounds is about more than just stitching up flesh.

Trivia

  • Polly speaks with a regional Delphi accent. It's also known as Received Pronunciation, or Queen's English. Most people would consider it to be a British accent. Listen to a sample of her speaking here.
  • Polly's last name is pronounced KORE-ay. Kore is another name for Persephone, the Greek goddess of springtime, daughter of Demeter, and queen of the Underworld. Her first name, Hippolyta, is the name of the queen of the Amazons of Greek myth.
  • Kore likes to collect salvaged medical journals and technical manuals for medical equipment. Her favorite is a copy of Libris Surgical Quarterly, which has an extensive article detailing the pros and cons of various types of surgical stitches and detailed illustrations of each.
  • She has a single tattoo: a butterfly on her right bicep with Thracian script below it which translates as the word free.

Known Associates

Mugshot The Skinny
jacobs.jpg
CPL Benjamin Jacobs. A fellow medic, and fairly by the book. He's got some medical journals for trading and also hails from Caprica; this makes him at least initially worth talking to in Polly's view. He's got a voice like buttah and a tendency to flirt which she resolutely ignores.
epi.jpg
CPL Epi "Shortstack" Jarot. She is tiny, tough, and likes to blow things up. This alone makes her an excellent prospective friend in Kore's opinion. She's also one of those women who seems obsessed with Spider's ass.
cinder.jpg
PVT Cinder Brand. A former stripper turned marine? That's kind of awesome. Kore hasn't had much opportunity to get to know Cinder, but is looking forward to it. Hey, any woman who can dance on a pole and shoot a machine gun has moxie!
dell.jpg
PVT Dell Triptolemus. Stubborn and honest, almost to the point of stupidity, but not a bad guy for all that. His mouth's gonna get him in trouble, but Polly seems to like him despite the fact that he can be a disrespectful boot.
