Biographical Info
History
Mason S. Montgomery was born in a small town on Tauron to a family of modest income. They moved to a larger city when the young Mace was twelve, and ended up settling in a sketchy sort of neighborhood with a lot of violence, gang activity, and crime. Her parents, both grocers, opened a small bodega in the neighborhood, and it remained curiously untouched by violence for several years. Unbeknownst to her parents, both of Mason's older brothers joined up with the local gang, and used that to help protect their parents. Young Mason, always quite keyed in to what was going on round the way, had that number pretty fast, and spent many of the years from age 13 to 17 learning the rules of the street.
By age 16, after showing an aptitude with her hands, she got into mechanics. Her dyslexia, as yet undiagnosed, kept her from excelling in other areas, though she had the brain for it. She devoted much of her time to learning by apprenticeship to a local shop, one who handled a lot of business from street racers who wanted custom work. Surrounded by men and boys in it for the cash, Mace was labeled off limits due to being a mechanic in one of the best little shops in town — the last thing a hot rod wants to do is get his favorite shop to blacklist him for messing around. Mason's culture shifted when she discovered a love of driving. She became a racer herself, but remained at the shop as a mechanic during the day. She began doing custom mods, and thus a life of money, thrills, and hard work blossomed into something more.
Sadly, a venture into larceny got her busted, and she was given a choice at age 18. Straighten up and ship out with the military, or face jail time. The mil had everything but the money, so at the pleading of her shocked parents, and the threats of injury from her big brothers, she inked the paperwork and got on her way.
Military life agreed with Mace, after a little period of adjustment when she and the Colonial Navy had to get used to each other. She brushed up her Standard, cut off her bleached out pink hair, and stopped sucker punching people over small offenses. Now, some eight years later, she's a PO1 whose demeanor and record do not reflect the sins of her childhood. To meet her now, one might find it hard to believe she ran with a rough crowd as a kid.
Reputation (or Mil. Service)
Mason has served aboard the Battlestar Hestia for all of her 8 years with the military. She is devoted to mechanics, treats her fellow Deckies like family, and those ornery pilots like strange cousins you deal with because you must, and because she has a soft spot for rebellious kids, which is really all that most of them are. Her linguistic difficulties can present a problem sometimes when dealing with those who do not know her well, but it never affects her job.
